Surfas welcomes Jennie Cook, a L.A. native and owner of Jennie Cook’s Catering and Plant-Based Parties. Her cookbook, Who Wants Seconds?, is a journey through her Pennsylvania Dutch roots, to her current passion - healthy eating with robust flavors. Jennie also gives advice on low-stress entertaining, sourcing, and sustainability. Her straightforward recipes will inspire beautiful meals for all palates and make it easy to gather everyone to the dinner table. Jennie will be sharing her Potato Mania with us and proving that life IS better with potatoes.  

Jennie will share recipes for:
Jaffna Potatoes
Potato Endive and Avocado Ensalada
Sweet Potato Fritters with Crema and Blackberry Balsamic Reduction
Cape Verde Vegetable Soup with Potatoes and Cabbage

What are all those meats and vegetables in Vietnamese sandwiches? Can you master making them yourself? Yes. Join Andrea Nguyen, celebrated author of The Banh Mi Handbook: Recipes for Crazy-Delicious Vietnamese Sandwiches, to learn how to craft your own. She’ll discuss the sandwich’s history, the nuances of constructing excellent banh mi, and how to source key ingredients such as the bread.

You’ll learn how to make a delicious Hanoi grilled chicken banh mi, as well as the classic daikon and carrot pickle. You’ll also be inspired by Andrea’s “Surfas dac biet” special combo banh mi.

Andrea will demonstrate key techniques and we’ll make sandwiches for you to sample. At the signing that follows, Andrea will gladly personalize your copy of The Banh Mi Handbook. Bring your banh mi curiosity and cravings to this fun event.

Andrea Nguyen is a celebrated author, teacher, and consultant whose work interprets traditional techniques and conveys personal stories. Her writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Bon Appetit, and Saveur, where she is also a contributing editor. Andrea’s landmark cookbooks, Into the Vietnamese Kitchen, Asian Dumplings and Asian Tofu were selected as James Beard and IACP cookbook award finalists. Cooking Light magazine included Into the Vietnamese Kitchen and Asian Dumplings among its picks of the top 100 cookbooks.

Published in July 2014, The Banh Mi Handbook garnered praise from the Wall Street Journal, Cooking Light, PBS Food, San Francisco Chronicle and LA Weekly. Andrea lives in Santa Cruz, where she also publishes Vietworldkitchen.com.
