Long before Linda Bloodworth-Thomason created a series around four Southern “Designing Women,” Bobi Leonard had already set the design standard in Los Angeles. Ambitious, industrious and attractive, she has forged a reputation as a capable professional, blessed with both a creative vision and business acumen. She has also helped transform the Main Street district of Santa Monica, once a derelict eyesore, into a chic business corridor.
Bobi’s design vision has made her a popular and frequent guest on television shows around the country, including “Vicki,” “KTLA Morning News,” “Good Day LA,” “Home Show,” “Hour Magazine,” “Live in LA” and “HGTV-The Home and Garden Network.” Bobi is an expert at showing viewers how to introduce design into their lives without blowing the budget. Her appearances have covered the gamut of design challenges: romanticizing a bedroom, organizing closets, decorating children’s rooms, holiday decorations, antiques, creative gift giving, table decorations and many more.

Spearheading the operation of three Santa Monica showrooms, concurrent with a residential and a commercial design service, Bobi is an expert at assuaging the fears of first time buyers (whom she dubs “the New Los Angeles”) and adapting to their financial needs. She also caters to the celebrity community and other sophisticated and demanding patrons. Her client base has remained loyal in response to the designer’s own integrity--remaining true to her artistic instincts without pandering to the latest trend.

A native of Palm Springs, Bobi first discovered an aptitude for design while growing up in the Bahamas with her father, a successful importer. Her appreciation of native treasures was not confined to one region, however, as Bobi experienced a rare cosmopolitan education including travel to the Far East. With no formal training in architecture or interior design, at age 14 she set the pace for her career by designing a fully furnished, all-glass house that was built in the Caribbean.
Returning to the States to study pre-med at UCLA, Bobi finally abandoned that career path after managing a friend’s design studio in Mexico one summer. Her future in interior design was sealed. Having followed her father’s footsteps, operating a small import business from her garage, she obtained a $5,000 loan and opened her first showroom on Main Street in Santa Monica. “My mother nearly disowned me when she discovered I was going there -- the areawas practically a slum at the time,” recalls Bobi, an avid surfer whose love for the seaside community cemented her intent to build a business where few others would. Her vision would prove nothing less than prophetic, since Main Street is now one of the most commercially
viable shopping areas in the United States.

After a brief stint in Beverly Hills, Bobi returned her business to Main Street in Santa Monica  in 1975. Within a year Bobi Leonard Commercial and Residential Designs proved a snowballing success with clients such a Candice Bergen, Eileen Brennan, Englebert Humperdinck and Burt Young in her roster. Among her first commercial accounts were the Beverly Hills Sports Connection, Jag Stores and Casa La Pita Restaurants.
Bobi purchased 15 properties on Main Street over the years. In less than a decade her commitment paid off— Main Street shucked its bars, missions, and thrift shops and began to attract upscale businesses. With such new neighbors as Armani, Wolfgang Puck’s Chinois,
Banana Republic and The Gap, Bobi Leonard had not only pioneered the region but had become a wealthy landowner in the process.

Bobi’s tropical-inspired designs have proven a monumental success, even despite the recession that has taken its toll on her competitors. A committed environmentalist, she has also raised money for the Santa Monica-based Heal the Bay organization and worked to prevent the overdevelopment
